The story behind

Danish wooden chairs are a major chapter in the modern furniture tradition. Børge Mogensen (internal link BM)(1914–1972) continued the legacy of Kaare Klint (internal link Kaare Klint) with a desire to create functional furniture for everyday life – simple in expression, precise in proportions and created to be used. He saw the chair as a tool in daily life, where comfort, materials and construction should be naturally balanced.

Throughout his career, Mogensen collaborated with, among others, FDB Møbler, Fredericia Furniture, Søborg Møbler and P. Lauritzen & Søn. The many Børge Mogensen chairs from the period demonstrate his special ability to unite craftsmanship and function in a calm, humane design language.

The design and materials

Børge Mogensen worked with simple, well-thought-out designs, where honest materials and clear craftsmanship were always at the center. He used several types of wood – including oak, beech, teak, mahogany and rosewood – depending on function and expression.

The seats were often made of natural wicker, paper yarn or full grain leather, and many of his models show how form and function meet in a carefully coordinated interplay between wood, wicker and fittings. It is precisely this combination of robust construction, human proportions and simple aesthetics that has made his chairs timeless and sought-after.

Our most famous Børge Mogensen chairs

BM 61 – Wicker and wood dining chair

Designed around 1960 for Fredericia Furniture. A light and precise dining chair with a frame in oak or mahogany and a seat and back in birch wicker. The simple shape and fine proportions give the chair a natural comfort and a calm expression.

BM 62 – Dining chair with armrests

Designed in the same period as BM 61 and with the same construction and materials, the model is often used as an end chair at the dining table and emphasizes Mogensen's sense of functional variations.

Hunting chair BM 3237 – Classic craftsmanship and strength

The hunting chair (internal link) was designed in the early 1950s and produced by Erhard Rasmussen and later Fredericia Furniture. Made of oak with a seat and back in full grain leather, fastened with leather straps. The chair combines craftsmanship, material strength and functionality in one.

The People's Chair J39 – Functionalism for the People

Developed in 1947 for FDB Møbler. Made of solid wood with a hand-woven paper yarn seat. The Folkestolen (internal link) became an icon of Mogensen's democratic design philosophy and is still in production today.
