Armchairs by Børge Mogensen
The story behind
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) is one of the most iconic figures in Danish furniture design. His approach to furniture was uncompromising – a fusion of functionality, comfort and aesthetics. Among his most popular works are a series of armchairs that balance classic Danish joinery with timeless design.
Mogensen designed several armchairs that are now internationally recognized design classics – from the robust Spanish Chair to the upholstered models with soft lines and high comfort. They are all created with the user in mind and produced with materials that age gracefully.
The design and materials
Børge Mogensen's armchairs range in expression – from solid wooden frames with full grain leather to upholstered models in leather or textile. Many chairs are made of oak, walnut, mahogany or teak and upholstered with aniline leather, semi-aniline leather, wool or high-quality textile.
The design is characterized by calm proportions and thoughtful details – often based on traditional European furniture types interpreted with Nordic simplicity. Common to all of them is a focus on comfort and a construction that is built to last.
Well-known models within Børge Mogensen armchairs:
BM 2226 – The Spanish Chair
The Spanish Chair (BM 2226) is an iconic Danish design classic created by Børge Mogensen in 1958 after an inspirational trip to Spain, where he studied traditional hide and leather furniture. The chair is made of solid oak with distinctive, wide armrests and saddle straps in thick full-grain leather that span both the seat and back and create an open, sculptural expression. The combination of robust materials and a light, open design ensures both long durability and a visual lightness that is characteristic of Mogensen's furniture architecture. The Spanish Chair is particularly suitable as a free-standing armchair in living rooms, reading corners and classic home interiors, where it creates an expression of authority, raw elegance and timeless craftsmanship.
BM 2207 – Over-upholstered armchair
BM 2207 is a classic upholstered low-backed armchair designed by Børge Mogensen in 1963 for Fredericia Furniture. With its simple, balanced design and high level of comfort, it has a permanent place in Danish furniture history. The chair combines a timeless design with functional upholstery, which provides a comfortable seating experience without compromising on the purity of the lines. The armchair can be chosen in a variety of different materials and surfaces, from classic black leather with solid oak legs to modern textiles and colored leather variants, making it flexible in both modern and classic interiors. The firm, well-padded cushions ensure ergonomic support, and the chair works equally well as a stand-alone accent and as part of a sofa group in the living room or recreation room.
BM 2204 – Wingback chair
BM 2204 Wingback Chair is Børge Mogensen's interpretation of the classic armchair with a focus on comfort, presence and tranquility. Originally designed in 1963, this wingback chair envelops the sitter with high sides and an organized sitting zone that invites relaxation and longer stays. The chair is designed with strong, simple lines and is available with upholstery in either leather or textile, so it can be adapted to different styles and needs. Many also choose the accompanying stool for optimal comfort. The frame and legs can be made of quality materials such as oak, teak, beech, walnut or mahogany, which reinforces the classic expression and timeless quality. The wingback chair's combination of solid craftsmanship, classic proportions and modern usability makes it ideal as a reading chair, cozy chair or as an elegant piece of furniture in the office and living room.
