Fredericia Furniture (Founded 1911)

Danish furniture manufacturer – craftsmanship tradition and Danish Modern heritage

Fredericia Furniture – formerly Fredericia Stolefabrik – is one of Denmark’s most significant furniture manufacturers from the 20th century. Their collaboration with Børge Mogensen in particular made Fredericia a cornerstone of the Danish Modern era. The company is known for an uncompromising approach to craftsmanship, quality and honest materials – values that continue to make their historic furniture sought after by collectors and design connoisseurs.

Founding and early years (1911–1955)

Fredericia Stolefabrik was founded in 1911 by NP Ravnsø in Fredericia. Ravnsø wanted to create furniture of the highest quality and employed some of the country's best craftsmen. In the first half of the 20th century, the factory produced a wide range of solid, classically oriented furniture and achieved success through strong exports and industrial production. The company remained in the ownership of the Ravnsø family until 1955.

The breakthrough of modernism with Graversen and Mogensen (1955–1972)

In 1955, the visionary Andreas Graversen took over Fredericia Stolefabrik and led Fredericia Furniture in a completely new direction. He wanted to combine the factory's solid craftsmanship with the functionalist ideas of the time and modern lifestyle. In the same year, he began collaborating with Børge Mogensen, who became Fredericia's house designer and one of the most influential designers of the Danish Modern period.

Mogensen created furniture based on the principle of "honest design" – functional, durable furniture made from good materials without superfluous details. This collaboration resulted in some of the most iconic furniture classics in Danish design history.

Iconic furniture produced by Fredericia Furniture

  • The Tremmesofaen (1945) – light, flexible and visionary; a significant break with the heavy sofa shapes of the time.

  • J39 – “The People's Chair” (1947) – Mogensen's democratic classic, known for its simplicity and exceptional durability.

  • The Hunting Chair (1950) – a robust armchair in oak and full grain leather that patinas beautifully through use.

  • The Spanish Chair (1958) – one of Fredericia's most iconic productions; wide armrests, solid construction and exquisite full grain leather.

  • BM 2213 Sofaen (1962) – Mogensen's own sofa, originally designed for his private home; today one of the most sought-after designs from Fredericia's historical production.

Other historical collaborations

Although the collaboration with Børge Mogensen constitutes Fredericia's most important era, the company also produced selected furniture by other important Danish designers:

  • Hans J. Wegner – including the J16 rocking chair, which became part of Fredericia's historical range.

  • Nanna Ditzel – her early designs contributed to Fredericia's development at the end of the 20th century.

These collaborations reflect Fredericia's role as a quality-conscious manufacturer for some of Denmark's most important designers.

Legacy and significance

Fredericia's historic production from the mid-20th century stands as a central part of the Danish Modern movement. Their furniture is characterized by exquisite craftsmanship, classic materials such as oak and full grain leather, and a design language that still feels relevant today. The vintage furniture produced during this period is considered among the finest examples of Danish furniture art.
