The story behind
Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was one of the most influential designers in Danish furniture history. He was known as the “Master of the Chair” – and for good reason. Wegner designed over 500 chairs in his lifetime, many of which are now considered among the world’s most iconic pieces of furniture.
Wegner's chairs are created with a rare combination of function, form and craftsmanship. They are thought out down to the smallest detail and combine sculptural elegance with practical comfort. Many of the models are still in production and loved the world over – by collectors and modern design lovers alike.
The design and materials
Hans Wegner's chairs are often made of solid wood such as oak, teak, ash or beech, and combined with materials such as wicker, leather or upholstery. The design is characterized by soft organic shapes, well-thought-out proportions and visible joints, which emphasize the honest construction of the chair.
Whether it's dining chairs, lounge chairs or office chairs, Wegner's philosophy is clear: The furniture should not only be beautiful, but also last for generations – and be comfortable to sit in.
Famous models of Hans Wegner chairs
CH24 – Y-chair
Designed in 1949 and one of the most iconic pieces of furniture in Danish design history, the CH24 – also known as the Y-chair – is characterised by its characteristic Y-shaped back and seat in woven paper yarn. The chair is light, elegant and surprisingly robust, and is available in many wood and finish variants.
CH30 – Dining chair
A classic dining chair with a softly shaped backrest and integrated legs. CH30 has a harmonious silhouette and great seating comfort. It is typically made of beech or oak with a seat in leather or textile.
CH31 – Dining chair
A further development of CH30, but with armrests and more distinctive lines. CH31 is a timeless chair that can be used both around the dining table and as a freestanding chair. It is available in different variants with wicker or upholstered seat.
CH29 – Sawhorse chair
Designed in 1952 and known for its distinctive construction with slanted legs and backrest resting on transverse supports – inspired by a classic sawhorse. CH29 has a simple yet dynamic design and is available in a variety of woods and seat types.
JH701 / PP701 – Steel and wood in perfect balance
The 701 chair combines Wegner's wood craftsmanship with industrial materials. With a frame in chromed or black lacquered steel and a wooden backrest (often with contrasting inlays), this chair is a study in contrast and refined construction.
W1 and W2 – Classic dining chairs
These models are among Wegner's early designs. The W1 and W2 have clean, functional lines and are typically available in oak or teak with a seat in braided cord or wool. The W2 is particularly known for its curved backrest and lightness of expression.
