The story behind

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is world-renowned for his chairs, but his sofas occupy an equally important place in Danish furniture history. Wegner's sofas are characterized by the same fundamental philosophy as his chairs: function before ornamentation, uncompromising craftsmanship, and a design language that endures over time.

Wegner developed several sofas in collaboration with manufacturers such as Getama and AP Stolen. The sofas were designed for private homes and public spaces and combine comfort, aesthetics, and robustness. Today, Wegner sofas are sought-after design classics and a natural choice for those who desire authentic Danish modernism.

Design and materials

Wegner's sofas often feature solid wood frames – typically oak or teak – and with loose or fixed cushions in wool or leather. The construction is visible and honest, and the proportions are carefully balanced, so the sofa appears light yet solid.

The cushions are usually constructed with springs and foam, providing high seating comfort and a long lifespan. Several models are available in both 2- and 3-seater versions, as well as with accompanying armchairs and stools.

Well-known models of Wegner sofas

GE 290 – The Sofa Series

The GE 290 series is among Wegner's most famous sofas. The series was designed in 1953 and produced by Getama. The sofas are characterized by their low, wide form and stringent lines. They are available as 2- and 3-seater sofas and match the GE 290 armchairs in both proportions and material selection.

GE 236 – Sofa with visible wooden frame

The GE 236 is one of the more architectural sofas designed by Hans J. Wegner and was produced by Getama in the 1950s. The model is characterized by its distinct wooden frame, where the construction is open and supports the loose cushions. The back is fully upholstered, thus distinguishing it from actual slat models, giving the sofa a more cohesive and calm appearance.

The sofa is crafted from various wood types and has been seen over the years with a wide range of upholsteries – from wool and leather to other textiles depending on the period and later re-upholstering. The interplay between the supportive frame and the softer elements gives the model its characteristic balance between construction and comfort. The GE 236 was offered in several sizes and is a natural part of Wegner's long-standing collaboration with Getama.

AP 18S – Upholstered sofa

The AP 18S is a more compact and fully upholstered Wegner sofa produced by AP Stolen. It has a soft and inviting expression but maintains Wegner's characteristic stringency in proportions and details. The sofa is suitable for both private homes and more formal settings.

GE 1 – Daybed

The GE 1 is a daybed designed by Hans Wegner with a focus on flexibility and simplicity. The construction is light and functional, and the furniture can be used as both a sofa and a resting place. The frame is made of solid wood and combined with loose cushions.

AP 20 – Sofa

The AP 20 is a classic Wegner sofa with a clear focus on comfort. It is produced by AP Stolen and has a solid wooden frame combined with upholstered cushions. The sofa appears calm and balanced and fits naturally into Wegner's other furniture universe.
