The story behind

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is particularly known for his chairs, but his desks hold an equally significant place in the Danish design tradition. While the chairs are often highlighted for their formal clarity, Wegner's desks particularly demonstrate his understanding of construction, function, and cabinetmaking.

A Wegner desk is designed with respect for the needs of work. The desks are thoughtfully constructed, proportioned, and detailed, and are created to function freely in a room – often with a finished back and a construction that can be viewed from all angles. Whether it's a classic workspace, a more compact sewing table, or a freestanding executive desk, Wegner's desks combine practical function with a calm and timeless expression.

Design and materials

Wegner desks are characterized by constructive honesty and a clear understanding of materials. They are often made from wood types such as oak, teak, or mahogany – sometimes in combination – and details such as flaps, drawers, and stretchers are integrated as a natural part of the design.

Several models are freestanding and designed with drawers or storage solutions that support the work function without appearing heavy. At the same time, the proportions are carefully balanced, so the desks appear light and well-balanced in the room. The surfaces of the materials develop a beautiful patina over time, which contributes to the desk's character and authenticity.

Known models of Wegner desks

AT 305 – Desk

The AT 305 is a freestanding desk with a distinctive and well-thought-out construction. The model is available in various finishes, often in oak or teak – and in some cases in combination – and is characterized by three drawers and flaps that provide extra workspace and flexibility. The construction is solid and features visible joints and craftsmanship details that underline Wegner's approach to furniture design. The AT 305 functions both as a classic workspace at home and as a more representative desk in office environments.

AT 325A – Desk

The AT 325A is a freestanding desk from the 1960s, made of oak and characterized by two drawers under the tabletop. The model has a simple and strict expression, where metal stretchers can be included as a constructive detail in certain versions. The proportions of the desk make it suitable for smaller workspaces and as a supplement in larger interiors. The AT 325A appears as a functional and well-balanced desk with clear roots in the Danish cabinetmaking tradition.

JH 563 – Desk

The JH 563 is a rarer desk, often referred to as a “Wishbone” desk, made of teak and oak and with two drawers. The desk is characterized by a light and elegant construction, where the details are finely tuned. The combination of materials and the slender structure gives the desk a refined expression, making it suitable for both private homes and more formal work environments. The JH 563 is an example of Wegner's ability to work with variations of known constructive principles in a new context.

JH 810 – Desk

The JH 810, also known as the “Directors Desk,” was designed in 1970 and is a freestanding desk with a distinctive, cassette-shaped tabletop. The model is seen in mahogany and wenge, among other materials, and is equipped with two front drawers and a hanger frame and handles in matte chrome-plated steel. The expression is more architectural and representative than the earlier models, making the JH 810 suitable as a central desk in an office or home office. The construction combines weight and precision and marks a later phase in Wegner's production.
