The story behind

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is considered one of the greatest names in Danish furniture design. His armchairs stand as some of the most elaborate examples of modern joinery, where comfort, proportions and construction merge into a higher unity.

Wegner consistently worked with the chair as a type of furniture and had a special ability to unite the functional with the sculptural. His armchairs are not intended as eye-catching objects, but as natural elements in a room – furniture that slowly reveals its quality through use and time.

The design and materials

Wegner's armchairs are made of solid wood, most often oak or teak, combined with materials such as paper yarn, wicker, wool and leather. The construction is visible and honest, and the details are executed with great precision – from the tenoned joints to the hand-woven seats.

Comfort is always central. Whether the chair is upholstered or woven, the proportions are carefully balanced to support the body naturally. It is this balance that is at the heart of what makes a Hans Wegner armchair timeless.

Famous models of Hans Wegner armchairs

AP19 / PP19 – The Teddy Bear Chair

Designed in 1951 and among Wegner's most iconic armchairs, the Teddy Bear Chair got its name when a journalist described how the chair embraced the sitter. It is characterized by its high backrest, distinctive armrests and massive legs – often with the characteristic “paws”. The chair is today produced by PP Møbler and is available in several materials, including wool, leather and lambskin.

The Flagline chair – GE 225 / PP 225

Designed in 1950, the Flagline Chair combines a lightweight steel frame with a seat in woven flagline and appears both relaxed and rigorous. The construction provides surprisingly high comfort, and the chair is a clear example of Wegner's ability to work with industrial materials without losing warmth and elegance.

JH 512 – The fireplace chair

A folding armchair from 1949, produced by Johannes Hansen. The fireplace chair is made of solid wood with a seat and back in wicker and often comes with an original hook for wall hanging. A functional piece of furniture with a discreet, almost architectural expression.

CH 25

Designed in 1950 as one of Wegner's first models for Carl Hansen & Søn, CH 25 has a solid wood frame and a hand-woven seat and back in paper yarn. The weaving is extensive and testifies to the high level of craftsmanship that characterizes Wegner's early production.

CH 27

Designed in 1949. CH 27 is a more compact armchair with an oak frame and back and a wicker seat. The chair is low and calm in expression and appears beautiful from all angles – a fundamental principle of Wegner's design philosophy.

CH 28 – The Sawhorse Chair

Designed in 1951, CH 28 takes its name from the characteristic leg construction, reminiscent of a sawhorse. The chair combines soft, organic shapes with a distinctive construction and is both sculptural and comfortable.

AP 16

An upholstered armchair produced by AP Stolen. AP 16 has a more closed and soft expression than Wegner's wicker chairs, but retains the strict proportions. The chair is available in several upholstery types and wood types and is well suited both as a solitary chair and in furnished living spaces.

GE 290 Series

Designed in 1953 and produced by Getama. The GE 290 armchairs are characterised by their low, wide shape and distinct wooden frame. The series is available in both high- and low-backed versions and with loose cushions in wool or leather. One of Wegner's most widely used and comfortable armchair series.
