The story behind
The Flag Halyard Chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1950 and differs significantly from the rest of his work by shifting focus from wood to steel and halyard. The idea arose during a summer holiday near Aarhus, where Wegner dug himself into the sand to find the ideal sitting angle, and he later sketched the chair based on the positions he had explored on the beach.
The model was presented in 1950 and was Wegner's homage to early European modernists such as Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Marcel Breuer, who worked with tubular steel constructions and industrial materials. The design and materials
The Flag Halyard Chair is built around an open steel frame, with the halyard supporting the seat and back. Early Getama editions show the frame with lacquered parts and small wooden feet, while PP Møbler's later edition is made of stainless steel. Each chair contains over 200 meters of halyard, the rope traditionally used to hoist flags, stretched evenly from side to side in one continuous weave.
The chair is typically seen with a long-haired sheepskin, which softens the industrial steel construction and gives the model its characteristic comfort. A removable leather neck pillow is attached to the upper part of the frame and completes the look. The combination of steel, halyard, and natural materials was unusual in the 1950s and still stands apart from most other Danish lounge chairs of the period.
GE 225 and PP 225 - two production periods
The original production was handled by Getama in Gedsted from 1950 until the late 1980s, when the model went out of production. During these decades, the Flag Halyard Chair was produced only in small numbers and bears the model number GE 225. It is primarily this early Getama edition that is sought after today as vintage.
In 2002, PP Møbler resumed production, and the model is now produced under the model number PP 225. PP Møbler's version continues the stainless steel construction with specially developed halyard. The two production periods differ primarily in age, patina, and finish. The construction principle is the same.
