Just Andersen (1884-1943) stands as a central figure in this narrative. He was a trained sculptor and silversmith, and in 1918, he established his own workshop with his wife Alba. For decades, they produced jewelry, silverware, pewter, bronze, and the metal he invented himself: discometal.

Discometal emerged from a practical need. Bronze was expensive, and Just Andersen wanted to reach a broader audience with his work. He therefore developed a dark, bronze-like alloy of tin, lead, and antimony, named after Disko Bay in Greenland, where he was born. The alloy perfectly suited its time: during the Art Deco wave of the 1920s and 30s, geometric shapes, fluted surfaces, and darkly patinated finishes became widespread, and discometal was particularly well-suited to this design language. He took the exact recipe to his grave, but the result was a type of metal that could be shaped into lamps, vases, bowls, dishes, and figures in much larger quantities than bronze allowed. Discometal became a commercial success, reaching homes in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and the USA.

The material can be ground, chased, and cast, and is particularly well-suited for shaping with clean surfaces, fluting, and subtle relief. The surface changes over time. While bronze typically greens with age, discometal retains its dark character, while the patina slowly gains more depth and variation.
