The story behind

Finn Juhl (1912–1989) holds a special position in Danish furniture design. As a trained architect, he approached furniture with a more artistic and free mindset than many of his contemporaries. While the classic joinery tradition often focused on construction, Juhl worked more with form as an independent expression.

Finn Juhl chairs are characterized by their sculptural nature, where the seat, back, and frame often appear as separate elements. This approach gave the furniture a lightness and visual movement that set it apart from many other Danish pieces from the same period. Several of his early models were produced by Niels Vodder, while others were later manufactured by producers such as Bovirke and, more recently, House of Finn Juhl.

Design and materials

A Finn Juhl chair is often characterized by organic lines and a clear separation between the load-bearing structure and the upholstered parts. Seats and backs appear almost to float in relation to the frame, giving the furniture a light and sculptural expression.

Materials vary from model to model and may include wood types such as teak, walnut, or rosewood combined with leather or textile. The interaction between the shaped wooden parts and the upholstered surfaces is central to Juhl's design, where comfort and aesthetics are closely linked.

Known models of Finn Juhl chairs

NV 55 – Chair

The NV 55 was designed in 1955 and is one of Finn Juhl's classic dining chairs. The model was produced by Niels Vodder and can be seen, for example, in rosewood with leather upholstery. The chair is characterized by a clear and balanced structure, where the back and seat are shaped with a focus on comfort, while the chair's lines appear light and elegant.

BO 53 – Armchair

The BO 53 is an armchair produced by Bovirke and shows a simpler side of Finn Juhl's chair universe. The chair can be seen, for example, in beech or rosewood. The construction is relatively strict, but the slightly curved forms in the seat and back give the chair a characteristic Juhl touch and make it suitable both around the dining table and as a standalone chair.

NV 44 – Bone Chair

The NV 44, also known as the Bone Chair, was designed in 1944 and produced by Niels Vodder. The chair is built around a sculpturally formed wooden construction, where the organic shapes resemble the structure of a bone. This distinctive design gave the chair its name. The construction appears both light and strong and emphasizes Finn Juhl's interest in working with the form of wood as an independent, artistic element.

NV 46 – Chair

The NV 46 was designed in 1946 and produced by Niels Vodder. The chair is available both with and without armrests and can be seen in various types of wood with leather or textile upholstery. The design clearly shows Juhl's interest in organic forms, where the back lifts from the frame, giving the chair a light and dynamic expression.

Egyptian Chair – Chair

The Egyptian Chair was presented in 1949 at the Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen and produced by Niels Vodder. The design is inspired by historical furniture types from ancient Egypt, but interpreted in Finn Juhl's own modern design language. The chair is typically made of wood such as Brazilian rosewood combined with leather and is characterized by its clear, architectural structure. Along with the Chieftain Chair, the Egyptian Chair is considered one of Finn Juhl's most significant pieces of furniture.
