Børge Mogensen created dining tables that combine functionality, aesthetics and craftsmanship. The story behind

Throughout his career, Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) created a series of lounge chairs that are today considered among the most significant works in Danish modernism. Where his dining and shell chairs demonstrate industrial clarity, Arne Jacobsen lounge chairs show a more sculptural and spatial approach to design.

Several of the models were developed as part of the overall interior design for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen in the late 1950s. Here, Jacobsen united architecture and furniture design into a whole, with chairs like the Egg, the Swan, and the Pot becoming central elements. At the same time, he developed the so-called Airport Chair for Copenhagen Airport in 1956 – a model that represents a more open and constructive approach to the lounge chair.

Design and materials

Arne Jacobsen lounge chairs are characterized by organic lines and precisely balanced proportions. Many of the models are built around a molded shell that gives the chair its characteristic silhouette and at the same time creates an encompassing seating experience. The bases and leg structures are typically made of metal or aluminum and contribute to the chair's lightness and balance.

The chairs are available in various finishes, including textile and leather, and several models are produced with swivel or tilt functions. Upholstery and surfaces vary depending on production and period, and the patination of the materials plays a significant role in the chair's overall expression. AJ 3316 – The Egg

The Egg was designed in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and is today one of the most iconic Arne Jacobsen lounge chairs. The chair is built around a molded shell that encloses the sitter and creates a sheltered, almost private zone in the room. The distinctive four-star aluminum base supports the chair's balanced expression, and the model is seen both with and without an accompanying ottoman. The Egg is a clear example of Jacobsen's ability to unite sculptural form with functional comfort.

AJ 3320 – The Swan

The Swan was also designed in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel and is part of the overall hotel project along with the Egg and the Pot. In contrast to the Egg's more embracing form, the Swan appears more open and dynamic in its silhouette. The swivel aluminum base contributes to the chair's lightness and flexibility, and the model is today recognized as an international design icon. The Swan functions both as a solitary lounge chair and in pairs, where its organic form is allowed to define the space.

AJ 3301 – The Airport Chair

AJ 3301, often referred to as the Airport Chair, was designed in 1956 for Copenhagen Airport. The model differs from the hotel chairs by its more open and constructive structure with a visible steel frame. The Airport Chair has a tighter and more architectural expression, where the lines are clear and the proportions are sober. It is available in several variants and stands as a prominent representative of Jacobsen's work with public spaces.

AJ 3318 – The Pot

The Pot was designed in 1959 for the bar at the SAS Royal Hotel. The chair has a lower and more compact form than the Egg and the Swan but shares the same organic approach to silhouette and comfort. The steel base emphasizes the chair's lightness, while the rounded form provides an embracing seating experience. The Pot is available in several variants and is a clear example of Jacobsen's work with molded shells on a more intimate scale.
