Finn Juhl
"Finn Juhl has designed an armchair, armchair or whatever you want to call it, that is so alive that it seems to quiver with vitality. It is expensive, and it is delicate, but a derby winner will always be..." Politiken in 1949 about Finn Juhl's Chieftain's Chair
Finn Juhl (1912–1989)
Danish architect and designer – pioneer of organic design
"Finn Juhl has designed an armchair, armchair or whatever you want to call it, that is so alive that it seems to quiver with vitality. It is expensive and it is delicate, but a derby winner will always be..." - Politiken in 1949 about Finn Juhl's Høvdingestol
Finn Juhl was one of Denmark's most visionary designers. Known for his sculptural and organic form, he created furniture that is now considered one of the most iconic works of Danish modernism. His designs broke with the strict functionalism of the Kaare Klint school and instead united art, craftsmanship and international modernism.
Background and education
Born in Frederiksberg in 1912, Finn Juhl originally wanted to be an art historian, but ended up studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His passion for art followed him throughout his life and left clear traces in his furniture and exhibitions. He was inspired early on by African art, ancient Egyptian furniture and contemporary modernist artists such as Jean Arp, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore and the Danish sculptor Erik Thommesen.
From 1934, Juhl worked for 10 years with architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, where he contributed to projects such as Copenhagen Airport and the Radio House. The experience gained from this was later translated into his own holistic interior design and furniture designs.
Career and style
Unlike colleagues such as Børge Mogensen and Ole Wanscher , who continued the traditions of the Klint School, Finn Juhl developed a free and artistic expression. He viewed furniture as works of art, and his designs experimented with form, proportions and materials in a way that challenged contemporary norms.
The close collaboration with master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder in the 1940s and 50s resulted in groundbreaking furniture that tested the limits of craftsmanship. Juhl also achieved international success, especially in the USA, where he collaborated with Baker Furniture and designed, among other things, the Trusteeship Council Hall at the UN headquarters in New York (1951).

- The NV45 Armchair (1945) – known as “the most beautiful chair in the world”, elegant and organic in its proportions.
- The Egyptian Chair (1949) – inspired by ancient Egyptian furniture.
-
The Japanese sofa (1953) – inspired by Japanese aesthetics, simple and monumental.
These designs have cemented Finn Juhl as a pioneer within the organic design language and made him internationally recognized as one of Danish Modern's greatest masters.
