Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard

Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) were pioneers of Danish Modern. With designs such as the AX chair, the Minerva sofa and the Spindle back chair, they created furniture that combined function, aesthetics and craftsmanship.

Danish furniture designers – pioneers of Danish Modern furniture

Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen are considered among the most influential Danish furniture designers of the post-war period. With their joint design studio Hvidt & Mølgaard (1944–1975), they created groundbreaking furniture and lamps, characterized by functionalism, simplicity and high craftsmanship. The duo's works are today considered classics of the Danish golden age of furniture design.


Background and education

Peter Hvidt was born in Copenhagen in 1916, while Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen was born in Aarhus in 1907. Both trained as architects at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where they became students of Kaare Klint , and where they later also taught. Already in the early 1940s they collaborated on furniture design competitions, and in 1944 they established their joint design studio Hvidt & Mølgaard in Copenhagen.


Career and work

Hvidt & Mølgaard quickly achieved success with innovative furniture series that combined modern design with functionality. As early as 1944, they developed the Portex series – an export-friendly furniture series in beech, based on the flat-pack principle, where the furniture could be assembled easily and shipped compactly. This was visionary for its time and a step towards the industrialization of Danish furniture production.

In 1950, they launched the iconic AX chair in collaboration with Fritz Hansen. The AX series became known for its use of laminated, steam-bent wood and its light, elegant design. The series became a great international success with extensive exports, especially to the USA. Other iconic pieces of furniture followed later, such as the X chair (1959), the Minerva sofa and the Spindle back chairs. Collaboration with manufacturers such as Fritz Hansen, France & Søn, Søborg Møbelfabrik, Horsnæs and Le Klint made their designs widely available and ensured their wide international distribution.

In addition to furniture, Hvidt & Mølgaard also worked on architecture and design of major infrastructure projects. Among their best-known architectural works is their role as aesthetic consultants on the Lillebælt Bridge (1970) and the Vejlefjord Bridge (1980), where they contributed to making large structures visually light and harmonious.

Legacy and legacy

Peter Hvidt died in 1986 and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen in 1993, but their designs live on as iconic symbols of Danish Modern. Their furniture was exhibited at MoMA in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, among others, and is today a sought-after collector's item at international auctions. At the same time, several of their classic pieces are being reissued today, which testifies to their enduring relevance and timeless quality.
